Costco Pecan Pie

Did not expect to see a 12-inches pie shows up in my small family. Usually, pie size is single digit.

Well, it is the holiday season! They usually don’t mention
the size, but the weight instead, a 4 pounds humongous pie or 70oz.

Before serving, a quick bake/toast so it is crunchy, gooey and
warm again. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top is what many people like
it. What? It is 541 calories for a slice (1/15 of a pie), the ice cream could
break the chart. It is, indeed, the sugar in that slice is 33 grams. It is
already over the AHA’s recommendation. Here is the nutrition facts from Recipe
of Health.

Let’s check out the ingredients. On the label, it says:

corn syrup, pecans, sugar, eggs, enriched bleached flour
(wheat flour, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), shortening[soybean
oil, mono & diglycerides, TBHQ & citric acid], water, glaze[water, sugar,
corn syrup, pectin, citric acid, carrageenan, xanthan gum, artificial flavor, potassium
sorbate (preservative),  sodium citrate, sodium
metabisulfite (preservative), sodium phosphate, paprika(color)], soybean oil
and/or canola oil,

contains 2% or less of the following: salt, natural and
artificial flavors, dextrose, egg whites, soy flour, whey.

In general, it is normal, corn syrup, pecans, and sugar for
the fillings, eggs, oil, and flour for the pie shell. However, glucose and
dextrose are basically the same thing. Corn syrup is made up of glucose, I
would assume it would be more than 2%! This line is required by the regulation. It must be correct. Just like eggs, it is the main ingredient but the percentage of egg white is less than 2%! And there is no milk nor cheeze, where is the whey comes from?
